Lots of people got up to speak with tales of their day, some were more warmly received than others!

Professional, Captain Challenge John o' Gaunt Golf Club

An early start and a glorious day for the full field looking to qualify for the finals in Turkey. We had not played the course before though that didn't stop Ian who played well, we finished fourth with score of 5 under, beaten only by two scores of 6 under and the winners from Channels Golf Club scoring 11 under to play in the finals in November. Good luck to them. We had the pleasure of the company of the Captain and Professional of Hawarden Golf Club. Steve and Alex were excellent company and if you're in the area (Chester races) look them up, you'll not be disappointed.

Myself and Joe Redmond entertained our friends from Birstall Golf Club in a Sunday morning challenge. Quite the coincidence in that my best man (Brass) when Clare and I married has a brother (Mick) who went to school with Joe. We took Joe and Mick on and won the day. However, Di, Clare, Poppy and Daisy joined us for lunch to make it a memorable day. A fantastic time was had by all. Rematch?

It's always a pleasure to visit Birstall which was presented very well after hosting the Midland Open. Thanks to Jan for organising the team along with Mick of Birstall, it made for a great day where we ran out winners 5 - 2. The mixed events are always well supported and always played in an exceptional spirit. My personal thanks to Connie for joining me, we had a great match and managed to keep our unbeaten run going. 27th July 2015

Kedleston Park Golf Club v Barmy Army

An interesting day with our friends from Walmley Golf Club, Tim and Ian, joining me and Andy on the 1st tee in this shotgun start. There was an issue with the starting klaxon in that it went off on the back-swing of a gentleman man teeing off on 10. Don't know how that could have happened! Video evidence has been secured, if you would like to view the recording please feel free to ask as I have it on my phone. By all accounts it is very funny!!!!!

A stellar score of 20 under won the day, which was completed by a trick shot show on the first tee and later an impromptu Q & A with our very own, Rod Thomas, Billy Hughes, Gerry Daly and Kenny Burns, it was a fantastic night!

Tim, Walmley's GM.

Trixie Smith Mixed

Always a pleasure to play with the Lady Captain and today no exception. Partnered by Nick Phillips and Mandy Holliday, who were worthy winners. Mandy played really well to bring home the trophy, Nick's acceptance speech was memorable for the fact that he didn't acknowledge his partner's contribution. That said, by way of an apology, he did offer to conduct a Home Fire Safety Check free of charge!

Most importantly we were able to celebrate Eileen's 60th year as a Kedleston Park Golf Club member! An inspirational woman indeed!

In anticipation of my Captain's away day in September we went to Thrybergh Golf Club for the day and had a great time. Kenny deliberate missing a three footer for the win! Not.

Happy days!

6th June 2015

Captain's Day

Well, I enjoyed that! Thank you all for making it a very special day for me and my family. Clare, Poppy and Daisy were made very welcome by you all (as ever) as was my Mother and Father who joined us for a couple of hours at lunch time. My Dad was particularly pleased to see old friends in Rod Thomas and Henry Newton, which made his day. My mum of course had a great time too, particularly seeing her dance partner Kenny again!

The help I received was fantastic, without which the day couldn't have happened. Emma, Michelle, Phil, Chas, Neil and all the staff really pulled out everything for me to make it such a success. Having the gazebo down on 7 was good for us all though a challenge for them. Ferrying all that food and drink to and fro was no easy task! Andy was excellent all day running around in a buggy and Emma and Michelle broke the land speed record in the gator, my Dad still has his heart in his mouth!

Thank you too to our Professional Ian, Phil and of course Jordan for their great support (as ever) on the day, superb!

Special mention needs to be made regarding our glamorous assistants. Liz (Mrs Rambo), Jean (Mrs Burns) and Linda (Mrs Hughes) who helped Clare and the girls feed and water everyone. Wonderful people giving up their time, I will always be in their debt, thank you ladies!

There were many non-playing visitors to the gazebo thank you all too.

Our playing visitors though provided much merriment! I was delighted to welcome through a full field, honoured indeed! Nearly 200 played and only 4 four balls kept all 4 golf balls dry! We tried to keep a rough tally of how many balls went in and we have settled on 60%!

I must say it was great to see everyone and chat, albeit briefly, to you all. Interesting for me too in that I saw some taking Drivers, 3-woods and others going through the back with sand wedges! Nearest the pin competition was compelling. I did ask David and his team to put the pin hard right, sorry! However, it did provide much sport. Having started the day off with the first four-ball at 0718 I raced round to 7 to welcome them again. Nick Goodwin was the first to hit in to 7 and put it to 10 feet with a wonderful PW, only to be outdone by Keith McCormack in the same four-ball! Keith held the prize for most of the day until Peter Buckley thinned a wedge, with action, to 4 feet!

Winners of the day were Steve Corden, John Waterson, Sean Hardingham and Martin Webster with a great score of 12 under. The conditions were testing to say the least but these lads rose to the challenge! Gentlemen, please spend your prize well in the Pro' shop and most importantly have a wonderful day's golf together at Woolaton Park!

Winners of the Past- Captains prize was Mr Jack Russell, Mr Kirkland, Mr Oates and Mr O'Neill, well played gentlemen and thank you for your kind words at the prize giving. We sat down to eat at 8pm, with a full house, and I was dancing with the Flower Garden till 11.30! They kept going all day and slept very, very well!

Everyone entered in to the spirit of the day for which I am truly grateful. Your contributions to my chosen charities, Derby Deaf Camp and Diabetes UK was outstanding, thank you all again. In addition we are now in a position to support a charity in Kenya, a school in fact that is close to Kevin Feeney. I will be making a donation to purchase books and equipment.

Last but not least may I also thank Eddie Beadsmore for getting you all off on time and of course a huge thank you to David Leatherland and all of the green keeping staff for presenting the course in such wonderful condition, thanks lads!

Finally, the following day we had the pleasure of hosting Cavendish Golf Club in a Mixed match. It was a little less blustery and the day went very well. I was explaining how much I had enjoyed the previous day and what a fiendish plan it was to place the pin on 7. The irony of it! Having won the 6th I had the honour on 7 only to see the pin was in the same spot!!!! It came back to bite me on the bum!

( I hit 9I to 10 feet, ask Connie)

Thank you all once again for making this such a memorable day for me and my family.

Kedleston Golf Challenge

A glorious evening saw the much anticipated Nine Hole Challenge between Mike and Phil. Shots (!) were taken all round and Mike went out to an early lead though Phil clawed (!) it back to earn a honourable draw. Dinner on the patio afterwards was enjoyed by all, not least the Flower Garden cheerleaders and the glorious caddies Michelle and Emma!

Open AmAm for the Junior Trust

Virtually a full field took part in the Open AmAm to raise funds for the Junior Trust. My team went out last, well when I say team i mean that in the loosest definition of the word! Suffice to say we didn't win the day, the penultimate four ball went on to win the spoils with a score of 80. They were from The Warwickshire and remarked that it was an annual fixture for them as they enjoy the Course so much. Many comments were made as to the quality of the Course and numbers have now swelled for the Gentlemen's Open on July 3rd. Which is an individual competition!!!

1st Team v Beau Desert (Away)

My debut at Beau and I thoroughly enjoyed it. A fantastic welcome and brunch from their Captain Colin and Pro' Barry preceded a 20 man (and boys) team taking on the locals. As ever I enjoyed the company of Ian who had a two on their par 4 Stroke index 1! We played well and raced to a 2up lead, pegged back and took the lead again only to go one down on 17!

Ian got up and down from the green side bunker on 18 for a win and to halve the match, fantastic! Probably the right result. Stellar performances from all though as the team romped to 2.5 v 7.5 away victory, outstanding!

Special mention should go to young Henry and Alex who won the anchor match against older boys too! A credit to the Club.

Thanks for all the support gentlemen. I'm now looking forward to the Rothley match on home soil!

The Millennium Bowl

The annual competition was held at The Leicestershire this year. The rains came in the morning, which was grim indeed, though matters brightened up for the 1pm shotgun start. It was good to see old friends from the participating Clubs with Brocton Hall running out winners. The day however was put in to perspective as The Northampton Golf Club did not join us this year. Their Captain sadly passed away recently and the funeral was to be held on the same day. Our heart felt condolences to the Captain's family and friends.

Howard finds the rough and eventually his ball!

4th April 2015

Kedleston Park Golf Club 1st Team v Burton on Trent Golf Club 1st Team

I had a fantastic time today joining the 1st Team for my first match of the year against Burton. Thank you to all of the team for making me very welcome, it is very much appreciated. Unfortunately Burton's Captain was unable to attend but their IPC Mr. John Banton was marvellous company as was their inimitable professional Mr. Gary Stafford. It is always a delight to be in Gary's company and John was the perfect gentleman too.

Brunch served at midday by Wildgoose  was exceptional as ever as was how the course was presented by Dave and his team. The course was wet in places but not as bad as expected. We are blessed indeed to have staff at the Club who work to the very highest standards!

There are many Captain's privileges and the pleasure of the company of our Professional Mr. Ian Walley is certainly one of them! Ian played beautifully today (eagle, birdie start!) shooting 67, a truly super round of golf. I played okay on the front nine making some great (!) up and downs to contribute and shot 40 (!) coming home, we gelled well for a very good win 6 & 5.

Our 1st Team played very well, you will be pleased to hear, against a strong Burton Team and won the match 6 - 0, a truly great performance indeed! Many thanks to Ian, Mr. Chairman, for selecting and organising a stellar team who has set the bar very high for the season.

Long may that continue!

29th March 2015

Carden Park away weekend

Well, the build-up matched the trip, a fantastic time was had by all. Many thanks to the 52 members who supported me on our trip to Carden Park. The weather forecast looked gloomy leading up to event but save for one downpour we stayed dry! There are times when 'what happens on tour stays on tour' and this should probably be one of those occasions. Idle gossip of spontaneous illness and inappropriate car parking shall not be mentioned. That said a picture will often reveal all.

We played the Nicklaus Course first, which is quite a walk, and very much a Nicklaus design. There was a huge storm, when we were on the 14th, that lasted 10 minutes. The storm was one strong enough to turn inside out the best 'storm proof' umbrella! Still, windy enough afterwards to dry us all out. Great company in Jack Russell, Fred Davidson and Robert Simpson made for a lovely day.

A drink, or two, was had in the Clubhouse afterwards. Swiftly followed by a shower and change for dinner for 8.30pm. We had a private room where the food was excellent and the wine flowed! Happy days indeed!

The draw for the Am-Am took place for the following day with many interesting match-ups! Aiden Murfin and Jake Beardsley were heard negotiating terms with the staff for the loan of Ear-Defenders!  Then everyone retired to the bar, where the wine flowed some more! New friendships made, old ones confirmed; a fabulous evening/night/morning was had. I am told I retired to bed at 3.30am and certainly wasn't the last. When asked what time the bar staff were allowed to close the bar apparently they cited that it was unique still to be open when in full day light!

After a hearty breakfast (fabulous) we set off on the Cheshire Course and I opened up with a birdie two to set the scene for a great round with great company in Ralph Jones, Ian Bradbury and Wayne Hart. We finished one of only four teams under par! I think the highest completed (!) round was 8 over...

Showered and changed we congregated in the Clubhouse bar for a brief presentation. Our professional Ian Walley, John Waterson, Fred Davidson and Guy Oates winning the day with 7 under, well played gentlemen.

Thanks to Ian Walley for helping to organise a faultless trip and thanks again to all those that joined me making it a truly memorable experience!

Captain on Tour, the Carden Park Draw!

A fantastic night at the Club where the opening Better-Ball pairings were drawn for our trip to Carden on 29th March. There were some interesting pairings and much banter in the 'blind' Champions League style draw. A truly special atmosphere in the Club, tempered only by Derby's defeat at Wolves. Even that couldn't spoil the fun had. We shall do this again, probably for the Captain's Charity Breakfast Shotgun on 21st June, get your names in now! The draw for the Am-Am competition on Monday at Carden Park will be held before dinner on the Sunday evening. I have had several messages asking for teams to remain as is and I am tempted to let this happen (!) anyone object? (Please imagine mischievous laughter)

Terry Corden's Archerfield Tour

Terry very kindly invited me and 10 others to Archerfield. It's always a pleasure to go and see DJ and play both the Fidra and Dirleton courses. A fabulous time was had by all, but what happens on tour stays on tour! (Any reasonable donation to the Captain's Charity will of course secure you tales of debauchery and the odd incident or two to keep you entertained!) Once again thank you to Terry for his hospitality and generosity, second to none Terry. Thank you too to everyone for their donations to the Captain's Charity, via Terry, very kind indeed raising £240!

My 50th Birthday Party

The place was rammed full with family and friends, I am honoured indeed that everyone took the time to come, thank you to you all. If you had half as good a time as I did then you had a blast!

The company was fabulous, the food from Michelle and Phil outstanding, as was the music from Ed'! We danced to the small hours, Northern Soul (mine) reverberating around the Club.

I'll add some more thanks shortly, in the meantime I was delighted that my dear mother and father were made so welcome again at the Club. Thank you.

It was truly humbling to receive all of the kind gifts, DVDs, alcohol, books, alcohol, dinner out for the family, alcohol, golf balls, alcohol, vouchers, alcohol and of course alcohol! (Hic!)

A truly memorable night with those most dear to me to share it with, thank you again.

Super Rams 2 v 0 Blackburn Rovers

Delighted to be asked by Mr. Gary McBride to join him in the 'big seats' at the I-Pro Stadium with fellow members and friends Chris Nye and Peter Siddall. A super night, we were fed and watered (!) royally, topped off with another win as the Rams march on.

Thank you Gary, I had a marvellous evening.

25th January 2015

Winter 9 hole Mixed Competition

A thoroughly sparkling, though chilly day at Kedleston Park Golf Club. Equally sparkling was the company of Mr. and Mrs Neal who played very well indeed. Whilst myself and the Lady Captain had a thoroughly enjoyable day we settled for mid-table mediocrity in the final standings.

Talking of final standings runners up with an excellent score of 22 stableford points was Mr and Mrs McGregor eclipsed only by playing partners Mr and Mrs Allen winning score of 23 points, well played indeed!

Dinner afterwards was of the customary high standard enjoyed by all, not least the Flower Garden!

More happy days!

Michelle's Birthday Celebrations

A superb night at the Club celebrating Michelle's 40th birthday, hard to believe isn't it! Great food, music and company. Members, staff past and present danced to the 'wee hours' again! Many happy returns to you Michelle! Especially from Poppy and Daisy xxxx

Burns Night Supper

What a fabulous night! Gentlemen began to arrive at 7pm, the last to leave, Mr. I. Willdisclose (for a charitable donation), left at 2.30am Saturday morning!

It was a perfect mix of culture and humour celebrating the life and times of Burns with every contribution outstanding. The brothers McGregor, Brian Spence, Donald Robb, Wilson Howden and Mike Farrell our wonderful comedian. Last but by no means least Emma Healy, the wonderful Emma, responded to the 'Toast to the Lassies' in a marvellous fashion, memorable indeed!

A wonderful menu from Michelle and Phil complemented by whisky and wine made for a special evening for all. Many thanks to everyone that contributed and everyone that came to what was a special night that will live long in the memory!

A few photographs were taken for posterity. Happy days!

In preparation...

Uncle F, making his Burns debut!

My great friend Wilson

Emma's response to the Laddies. Awesome!

and when it all was over many retired to the bar for a song and a nightcap, again and again and again...

17th January 2015

Winter League Am-Am

Great day with Bernhard Brogan, Nick Goodwin and the inimitable Kenny Burns (17 under, good but no cigar!). Laughed all the way round, Nick on great form counter acting the Kenny effect! Kenny was hiding from 'the game' but ultimately had the last laugh in the bar afterwards, behind which Emma showed a remarkable amount of restraint and of course professionalism. Ho hum!

Captain's Away Day

I can confirm that my Captain's Away Day will be held on the 25th September 2015, details to follow.

Captain's Drive-In New Year's Day 2015 Kedleston Park Golf Club

Surprisingly fresh, bearing in mind the excesses of the previous evening we set about our day. With the girls as scary witches keen to chase Scooby Doo and Daphne we got aboard our Mystery Machine (many thanks to our great friend Aiden Murfin) and headed for the Club.

Having been chased, in front of all those people, I settled for my drive and was pleased to make the fairway! Doubly pleased not to hit the snap-hook, sorry if that ruled you (95%) out of the sweep!

Come to think of it I've not hit the fairway since...

Having retired to the bar it began to dawn on me just how many people had come along, humbling indeed.

Mr. Roy Battelle very kindly took photographs of the day, though it was warm in that suit, thank you Roy (Rory) for giving us a lasting and treasured memento of the day.

Our day continued with a marvellous lunch. We had a fabulous time joined by the Chairman Ian and his wife KC; Robert, our General Manager, his wife Kate and their children George and Abigail and last but not least my dear Mother and Father. Our day couldn't get any better!

There was a superb atmosphere at the Club, it was full again for the New Year's Day Lunch.

Many thanks to everyone for making it such a special day for me and my family.

I hope you enjoyed the Scooby snacks!

New Year's Eve Celebrations 2014/2015 Kedleston Park Golf Club

What a fabulous night was had by all! Superb from start to finish, the Club decked out like a picture, dinner of the highest order and the wine flowed (though I was mindful of my duties the following morning)! The company was splendid too, when you could get them off the dance floor!

A night to remember

Captain and crew off to Carden Park 29th March 2015

Myself and Ian, our professional, discussed the merits of organising a 'season starting' golfing trip away. Perhaps a quiet affair, could we get 12 or 16? With Ian's contacts and considerable reputation we managed to secure a trip to Carden Park, Cheshire. Rounds of golf on both their Nicklaus and Cheshire golf courses separated by a quiet evening in the hotel, dining and perhaps sampling the local ales.

Well, we were most pleasantly surprised at the interest, Ian has worked tirelessly with Carden Park to accommodate a now closed list of 55! With deposits paid and room pairings agreed (!) it augurs well for a special time away at the end of March.

Might not be the quiet time away after all! There will be pictures, so watch this space.

(Advance notice - The Captain's official Away day will be on September 25th 2015, news and details to follow)

20th December 2015

Kedleston Park Golf Club Annual General Meeting 27th November 2014

I was thrilled to be nominated as Captain for 2015 and was was very much looking forward to the AGM. I wasn't too concerned at the prospect, having spoken at several AGMs, however I didn't anticipate how my pride in being nominated would quicken the pulse as much as it did! If you weren't able to attend, or indeed if you missed the clue for the Captain's Drive-In here it is in full!

Captain’s Speech 27th November 2014

Mr. President, Past Captains, Lady Captain, Ladies and Gentlemen members of Kedleston Park Golf Club…

  • Firstly, it’s a huge honour to be invited to be Captain of this great Club for 2015 and not a responsibility that will be taken lightly.
  • I’m privileged indeed. I will endeavour to uphold the traditions of the Club and will represent the Club to the best of my abilities. Please be assured, as ever, of my best intentions at all times.
  • May I congratulate our Lady Captain Lesley Loring. I am looking forward to our year!
  • May I present Leslie with this bouquet of flowers by way of advance thanks in anticipation of a great year.

  • I would also like to congratulate our new Junior Captain Adam Feeney. I’ve a huge amount of respect for Adam, if you didn’t know.
  • I’m positive we will work well together, let me know if I can be of any help. I’m putting one in the bank there Adam, go easy on us in the Competitions next year!

  • To our outgoing Lady Captain, affectionately known to me as Mrs Coe, many congratulations on a marvellous year. One of your Charities is particularly close to my heart and I personally know how much will be gained by the children of the Royal School for the Deaf. You should be proud indeed.

  • Mr Captain, where to start! Known affectionately to US his friends as the Big Man, and with good reason!
  • He may have taken too literally the advice to emulate our Ryder Cup heroes - Jacklin, Gallagher, Ballesteros et al to be a non-playing Captain!
  • Joking aside your commitment, humour and sheer presence has been an inspiration. A fantastic year!
  • Big man indeed, big man indeed (heart)!

  • Moving on!
  • I certainly had no idea or indication that I may be standing here. Which brings to mind a private conversation I had with Gerald, Mr. Pykett just three weeks or so ago.
  • Gerald and I have spoken again since and my personal opinion of Gerald has not changed. He is the perfect gentleman and more.
  • All I can do Gerald is offer you my support and best wishes for a speedy return to full fitness and I’m sure everyone here will echo that!

  • The STORY
  • Well, there was a knock on the door! After a very busy week we didn’t need visitors, the bar had already opened after all! It was Mr Captain!
  • We sat and talked, forever between us SIR, he refused a drink! Come to think of it he may not have been offered one!
  • and Clare began to cry! With pride and joy!
  • Our daughters Poppy and Daisy were equally happy but didn’t have a (Scooby do/Clue) how tears of joy worked!
  • However, they were bouncing and very excited at the news!
  • I was taken to the Club (Peter Sterling) to meet the Past Captains, humbling indeed. Not often speechless.
  • I was also told to shave off my Movember Tache, I was pleased to do so with donations of course gratefully received!
  • Truth be told i was pleased to shave it off! Particularly as I was going to have my photograph done!
  • Better still… On my return, rounding off a perfect day
  • Poppy and Daisy had stayed up to see me on my return!
  • Cue my own tears of joy!

  • Clare and I had the pleasure of celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary in September this year a remarkable achievement nowadays but more so bearing in mind my role as Chairman. I’m very lucky indeed to have my family’s support!
  • I have my 50th birthday to celebrate in the New Year. 50 always seemed a long way away… I hope it’s only half way!
  • I will enjoy my birthday here and hope my friends here can share that with me too!
  • If you don’t know me so well, or haven’t already gathered My family is EVERYTHING to me so please expect to see more of Clare, Poppy and Daisy this year! (Christmas Mixed on Sunday for example)
  • After all Poppy and Daisy, AS MEMBERS, are the future of our Club!

  • Talk of the Chairmanship earlier brings me to mention the extraordinary contribution of Andrew Kay both as Chairman and in supporting the Club doing work largely unseen. He won’t thank me for saying so but hey, who cares!
  • Our current Chairman Ian Neal picked up the baton and works tirelessly for the Club too alongside our superb General Manager Mr Robert Simpson.
  • This coupled with Ian our excellent professional, Phillip so admired for good reason by all especially the Juniors and Michelle and Emma with all the staff who look after us so royally.
  • Last but certainly not least my mentor and confidant Mr. President. A role model for us all!  We are in safe hands indeed!

  • It is of course customary to announce the Captain’s Charity for the year and I shall not disappoint. I will be pleased indeed to receive your support to my two chosen charities both close to mine and my family’s heart.
  • Firstly, Diabetes UK. My wife Clare is a raving diabetic and of course some of you will know that our professional’s daughter Izzy is also a diabetic. For someone so young to start the journey that Clare has been on is truly moving so anything given will help so many people.
  • My other Charity is Derbyshire Deaf Camp. For many years I volunteered to help disadvantaged young Deaf children enjoy some brief respite amongst friends at camps around the coast etc etc I’m extremely fortunate in being born in to the rich tapestry of a Deaf family and personally and professionally I have tried to give something back. Any support you can give me will be greatly appreciated

In conclusion…

  • Having been invited by Chris, the Captain, to come to the Club to meet the Past Captains and accept my nomination as Captain a friend of ours made his way through the throng and offered his hand…
  • And Gerry said… Congratulations Nigel, to be honest I did you a favour… I turned it down again…

  • Talking of friends I have many here, a place that is more than a Golf Club to me.
  • I have always been immensely proud to be a member of KPGC
  • I am honoured to be your Captain!
  • Friends, I would ask you to please join me at the Bar for refreshments!

It was a good night!
